Advancing Global Collaboration in Materials Science: THU-NUS-QUT-KMUTNB Joint Workshops
The 1st Joint Workshop on Advanced Materials—a landmark partnership among Tsinghua University (THU), National University of Singapore (NUS), Queensland University of Technology (QUT), and King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok (KMUTNB)—was successfully held on August 8, 2023, at Tsinghua University.
Organized by the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Tsinghua, the event, themed “Advanced Materials,” provided a dynamic platform for leading scholars to share groundbreaking research, exchange ideas, and explore future opportunities in materials innovation.
Professor Lin Yuanhua, Dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Tsinghua University, opened the forum by underscoring the importance of global collaboration and expressing his vision for more universities to join this growing academic network.
The event featured keynote addresses by Professor Barbaros Özyilmaz (Head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, NUS), Professor Dongchen Qi (Dean of the School of Chemistry and Physics, QUT), and Associate Professor Somrerk Chandra-ambhorn (Vice President, KMUTNB). All speakers emphasized the value of international academic cooperation in driving impactful research.
Following the opening ceremony, scholars from all four institutions shared their teaching philosophies, research strategies, and recent advancements in materials science. The workshop also showcased 14 pioneering studies covering a wide range of topics, including energy conversion and storage, two-dimensional materials, structural ceramics, laser diagnostics, and stainless steel, sparking vibrant academic exchanges and discussions.
Looking Ahead: The 2nd Joint Workshop in Thailand
Building on the success of the inaugural forum, the 2nd Joint Workshop on Advanced Materials Symposium will be held on August 7, 2025, at Cloud 9th Room, 9th Floor, Science and Technology Research Institute (STRI), KMUTNB, Bangkok, Thailand.
The upcoming symposium will bring together representatives and leading researchers from all four partner universities:
Tsinghua University (THU)
National University of Singapore (NUS)
Queensland University of Technology (QUT)
King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok (KMUTNB)
The event aims to deepen research collaboration, foster cross-institutional partnerships, and highlight emerging technologies and breakthroughs in advanced materials. With the participation of all partner institutions, the symposium is set to be another milestone in driving innovation and building a strong academic network across Asia and beyond.
